GDC Sumbal Stages Folk Play ‘Kanjoos’ Under Cultural Scheme; Artists Encouraged

Sumbal, April 20: A folk theatre performance titled “Kanjoos” was staged at Government Degree College (GDC) Sumbal on Monday, showcasing traditional artistic expression and themes drawn from social life.
The play was presented by Karam Buland Folk Theatre, Hanjigund Wathora Chadoora, under the Repertory Grant Scheme (Guru Shishya Parampara) of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
The event was attended by Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Sumbal as chief guest, while the Principal of GDC Sumbal was present as guest of honour. Among the invitees were theatre practitioner Nisar Naseem and Coordinator of National School of Drama (NSD) Branch Srinagar, Gulzar Ahmad Ganaie.
According to organisers, the production depicted aspects of rural and urban life through folk theatre, focusing on social themes and everyday experiences. The performance aimed to highlight cultural traditions and the role of theatre in reflecting societal issues.
Audience members, including students and faculty, attended the programme. Organisers said the event was part of efforts to promote traditional art forms and provide a platform for local artists.
Speakers on the occasion highlighted the importance of preserving folk theatre traditions and encouraging cultural activities in educational institutions.
Secretary of Karam Buland Folk Theatre, Fayaz Ahmad Bhat, acknowledged the support of the Ministry of Culture under the Guru Shishya Parampara Repertory Grant Scheme. He also thanked the college administration and participants for facilitating the event.
Officials said such programmes are intended to support cultural initiatives and encourage engagement with traditional performing arts.
