SWD Organises Awareness Programme on Rights of Senior Citizens in Sopore

Sopore, Mar 18: The Tehsil Social Welfare Office Sopore organised an awareness programme under the National Action Plan for Senior Citizens (NAPSrC) to sensitise the community, particularly the youth, about the rights, welfare measures and challenges faced by senior citizens.

The programme was held at Girls Higher Secondary School Sopore and aimed at promoting respect, dignity and protection for the elderly while highlighting the collective responsibility of families and society in ensuring their well-being.

Speaking on the occasion, Tehsil Social Welfare Officer Sopore, Wasim Ahmad, described senior citizens as the pillars of society who deserve care, security and dignity. He elaborated on various government welfare schemes designed to improve their quality of life and urged the younger generation to play a proactive role in supporting and respecting elders.

Tehsildar Sopore, Sheikh Tariq, who attended the event as Chief Guest, emphasised that elders are a valuable asset whose wisdom and life experience serve as guidance for younger generations. He called for strengthening family bonds and fostering a culture of empathy and responsibility toward senior citizens.

Resource persons from different departments conducted informative sessions on elderly care, legal rights and health-related concerns, underscoring the importance of strong family and community support systems.

The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, teachers, senior citizens and local residents, and concluded with a formal vote of thanks.
