Bandipora, March 17: A patch of uncultivated marshy land locally known as “Teche Naag,” situated in Ward No. 02 opposite the Industrial Training Institute Bandipora, continues to remain in a state of neglect, turning it into a safe haven for the drug addicts and anti-social elements causing growing concern among local residents.
According to the inhabitants of the area, the site has been presenting an alarming situation year after year. The marshy land, located amid agricultural fields, poses a serious threat to the safety and well-being of nearby households, particularly during evening hours .
Adding to the concern, locals allege that the dry vegetation in the area is frequently set on fire by miscreants every year, creating a serious fire hazard for the surrounding locality.
Residents also claim that the neglected site has increasingly become a shelter for drug addicts, who are often seen frequenting the area. This has further intensified the sense of fear and insecurity among the people living nearby.
Locals fear that if timely intervention is not made, the area could turn into a potential disaster.
Locals have urged authorities to take the land into proper custody and develop it into a productive and community-beneficial space.
Given its easy accessibility through a well-connected road, they believe the site holds significant potential for development, especially as a recreational facility for children and youth.
Locals said there is a common beleief in the town that there is no state land available. “Here we have this patch of land. Government should turn it into a recreational space for town residents,” they told Kashmir Convener.
In this regard, the residents recently submitted an application highlighting their concerns to the Hon’ble MLA of Bandipora. The MLA has reportedly forwarded the matter to the district administration, directing officials to examine the demand from an environmental and public welfare perspective.
With no designated recreational spots available in the locality, the residents have expressed hope that converting the land into a park or similar facility would be a historic and much-needed step. Residents remain optimistic that the MLA will consider allocating funds for the project in the near future.
