DH Bandipora Conducts First Laparoscopic Appendectomy, Marks New Era in Surgical Care

Bandipora, June 12: In a significant milestone for healthcare delivery in north Kashmir, District Hospital (DH) Bandipora on Friday claimed to have successfully performed its first-ever laparoscopic appendectomy, bringing advanced and minimally invasive surgical care closer to the residents of the district.

In a statement  issued to Kashmir Convener,  an official spokesperson  of the District Hospital said the landmark procedure was carried out by Dr. Bashir Ahmad Cheechak, Consultant Surgeon, with anaesthesia support from Dr. Iqbal and technical assistance from Mr. Mehmood ul Rehman, Operation Theatre Technician.

He said the entire OT staff played a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth and successful execution of the surgery.

Terming the achievement a major step in strengthening surgical capabilities at the hospital, Dr. Masrat Iqbal Wani, Medical Superintendent, DH Bandipora, lauded the surgical team for their professionalism and dedication.

“This achievement reflects our commitment to providing quality, modern, and minimally invasive healthcare services to the people of Bandipora,” said Dr. Wani. “It marks the beginning of a new chapter in accessible advanced surgical care in the district.”

The introduction of laparoscopic surgery—a technique known for smaller incisions, reduced recovery time, and lower risk of complications—will significantly benefit local patients, many of whom previously had to travel to tertiary care hospitals in Srinagar for such procedures.

Dr Wani said this successful intervention not only showcases the evolving capabilities of the district hospital but also signals a broader transformation in public health infrastructure in peripheral areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
