Premature Baby Saved at 92 Base Hospital, Srinagar After High-Risk Delivery
Srinagar, May 27: A baby girl born at just 26 weeks and 5 days of pregnancy, weighing only 750 grams, was successfully saved by doctors at the 92 Base Hospital, BB Cantt, under the Chinar Corps of the Indian Army, after an emergency delivery prompted by serious complications.
The infant’s mother, a 30-year-old woman diagnosed with immune thrombocytopenia—a blood disorder causing dangerously low platelet levels—was admitted to the hospital after suffering placental abruption and internal bleeding. She had lost approximately 1.5 litres of blood and was in shock when doctors performed an emergency caesarean section to save her and the fetus.
Following delivery, the newborn was admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where she remained under critical care for over 65 days. She required continuous respiratory support and frequent resuscitation, and was also treated for a congenital heart condition. Medical teams administered multiple rounds of oral medication to stabilize her condition.
The baby, affectionately called ‘Veerangana’ by the hospital staff, showed steady improvement and was discharged in stable condition at a weight of 1.89 kg.
Defence officials said the case highlights the medical preparedness and dedication of the Army’s healthcare system in handling complex emergencies under operational constraints.
