Garbage Dumping Goes Unabated on Jhelum Embankments in Hajin

Hajin: The embankments of the Jhelum River have turned into a dumping site, with people frequently throwing garbage into it at various locations in Hajin town of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district.
Locals blame nearby residents and shopkeepers for disposing of waste directly into the river, polluting the water and damaging the ecosystem.
“The authorities have failed to prevent water bodies from getting polluted. Waste is being dumped on the riverbanks either by residents or shopkeepers, and no action is being taken,” said Feroz Ahmad, a local resident.
He added that the concerned officials are not taking any action against those who continuously throw waste into the Jhelum.
Residents also complained about the foul smell emanating from the waste, especially during summer. “We urge the administration to take special measures regularly to keep the area clean,” they said.
They further expressed concern over the reckless dumping of household waste into the river, calling it an act of negligence that is polluting water bodies and posing serious health hazards.
Locals have urged the administration to take immediate steps to curb pollution and ensure proper waste management in the town.
