Gurez, June 5: In a remarkable display of unity and environmental commitment, students and the Indian Army jointly celebrated World Environment Day on Thursday in the remote and scenic Gurez Valley near the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district.

The celebration featured a plantation drive, with students and army personnel planting saplings to promote afforestation and environmental stewardship in the border region. The initiative was aimed at raising awareness about the importance of protecting nature, especially in ecologically sensitive areas like Gurez.

As part of the event, a drawing competition was held for school children, allowing them to creatively depict themes around pollution, wildlife conservation, and sustainable living. The vibrant artworks reflected the students’ understanding of urgent environmental challenges.

Students also delivered speeches on issues such as climate change, deforestation, and water conservation, emphasizing the need for collective responsibility to safeguard natural resources.

The Indian Army, which organized and facilitated the event, received appreciation from locals for its continued role in promoting community engagement and environmental awareness alongside its security duties.
