India’s 6G Vision is a Roadmap for Technological Leadership. India is setting its sights on becoming a global leader in 6G technology by 2030, as outlined in the Bharat 6G Vision Document released in March 2023.
With a commitment to ubiquitous, intelligent, and secure connectivity, the government is spearheading a range of initiatives to position India at the forefront of next-generation communication networks.
A key component of this vision is research and innovation, with the government funding two 6G testbeds—the 6G THz Testbed and the Advanced Optical Communication Testbed—to facilitate cutting-edge research. To build a 6G-ready ecosystem, 100 5G labs have been set up in academic institutions across India, fostering innovation and nurturing talent. Additionally, 111 research proposals on 6G network ecosystems have been approved to accelerate indigenous technology development.
The formation of the Bharat 6G Alliance marks a significant step in bringing together industry leaders, academic institutions, and research organizations to develop an actionable roadmap. India has also strengthened its global collaborations, signing MoUs with leading international 6G alliances and contributing to the International Telecommunications Union’s IMT-2030 framework. By advocating for “Ubiquitous Connectivity” and prioritizing coverage, interoperability, and sustainability, India is actively shaping global 6G standards.
Hosting events like the International 6G Symposium alongside WTSA 2024 and India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2024, India has demonstrated its intent to be a key player in the global 6G race. With a strong foundation in research, innovation, and international collaboration, the country is poised to revolutionize wireless communication and drive the next wave of digital transformation.
