Bandipora, September 25: The District Bandipora Wushu Championship 2026 and District Bandipora Rugby Championship 2026 concluded at Government Higher Secondary School, Purana Tulail, Gurez, on Friday, with organisers holding an award ceremony for participating athletes and winners.
The two-day championships were organised by the District Wushu Association Bandipora and District Rugby Association Bandipora, bringing together students from schools across the area and providing them an opportunity to compete at the district level.
The concluding ceremony was attended by the 2IC, 11 Kumaon, Indian Army, Gurez, as chief guest, while Javeed Mashooq Ahmad, Vice Principal, Government Higher Secondary School PTL, was the guest of honour. Padma Shri awardee Faisal Ali Dar was also present.
The 2IC appreciated the organisers for holding district-level competitions in the remote Purana Tulail area and interacted with the participating students.
Javeed Mashooq Ahmad thanked the organisers and Faisal Ali Dar for bringing the championships to Purana Tulail, saying that holding such events in remote areas could help provide children with sporting opportunities and identify local talent.
Faisal Ali Dar said the championships provided an opportunity to assess the sporting potential of children from the area. He said the participants showed physical strength and a willingness to learn and added that proper training and continued opportunities could help promising youngsters progress in sports.
In the Wushu boys’ competition, Owais Qarni Khan of HSS Purana Tulail, Adil Mehraj Lone and Lateef Ahmad Lone of GMS Dangithal, Tahir Manzoor of MA Zadigay Tulail, Sheikh Asrar Illahi of GMS Sheikhpura Tulail and Mohammad Imran Lone of HSS PTL won gold medals in their respective weight categories.
Ehsan Aqif of HSS Purana Tulail, Mohammad Ismail Wani, Shakeel Ahmad, Moeen Ali, Toufeeq Ahmad Lone and Sadam Hussain secured silver medals, while Mujeeb Ur Rehman, Jamsheed Ahmad, Sahil Shafi, Shaqib Ahmad Lone, Mubashir Ahmad Lone and Shoaib Ahmad Lone won bronze medals.
In the girls’ Wushu competition, Zytoona Bano of GMS PTL, Rehana Bani and Tabassum Aara of GMS Mazgund Tulail won gold medals. Maryam Munawar, Rabia Farooq and Sumaira Majeed secured silver medals, while Tabasum Mehraj, Iqra Shabir and Shaziya Aamir won bronze medals.
In rugby, Government High School Barnai won the boys’ title, with GMS Dangithal Tulail finishing runners-up. In the girls’ category, GMS PTL emerged winners, while GMS Mazgund Tulail finished runners-up.
The championships provided students from the far-flung areas of Gurez an opportunity to participate in organised sporting competitions and gain exposure to Wushu and rugby.
