JK Teachers Forum Flags Concerns Over MDM Implementation in Schools

Srinagar, April 16: The Jammu and Kashmir Teachers Forum (JKTF) has expressed concern over the approach adopted by some Zonal Education Officers (ZEOs) during recent school inspections, particularly in relation to the implementation of the Mid-Day Meal (MDM) scheme.

In a statement issued by JKTF Provisional President Javid Ahmad Bhat on Tuesday, the forum said that school heads are being asked to furnish explanations in cases where the MDM is not being prepared due to factors such as an ongoing strike by cooks and shortage of LPG.

The forum stated that holding teachers and school heads accountable under such circumstances is not justified, as these issues fall outside their control. It said that logistical aspects, including the availability of LPG and engagement of cooking staff, come under administrative responsibility.

The statement also referred to instances where teachers were allegedly directed to prepare meals themselves using firewood. The forum termed such directions as impractical and said they fall outside the professional responsibilities of teachers.
According to the forum, teachers and school heads have continued to support the functioning of the MDM scheme despite constraints, including delays in fund disbursement. It said that in some cases, staff have made efforts to sustain the programme using personal resources.
The forum urged the authorities to ensure timely supply of LPG and address operational issues affecting the scheme so that schools can function without disruption.
It also called for a coordinated and constructive approach between field officials and school staff to ensure smooth implementation of educational programmes.
