Bandipora, Jan 22: The Wular Conservation and Management Authority (WUCMA)  Thursday organised a Bird-watching event to highlight the ecological importance of Wular lake and sensitize people about the importance of the lake.

An official spokesperson said the initiative was part of the 150 years of celebrations of “Vande Mataram” organised by the District Administration Bandipora at Wular Vantage Park.

He said WUCMA  played a key role in promoting environmental awareness by organising a “Know Your Birds” photo exhibition and bird-watching activity at Wular Lake.

“Through this initiative, WUCMA introduced students to the rich diversity of resident and migratory bird species that depend on Wular Lake”.

Participants were provided with binoculars and birding equipment by WUCMA, enabling them to observe birds in their natural habitat and gain first-hand exposure to bird identification and behaviour.

The activity highlighted the importance of birding as an effective tool for understanding wetland ecosystems and monitoring biodiversity.

WUCMA officials sensitised students about the ecological significance of Wular Lake as one of the largest freshwater wetlands in the region and a vital habitat for migratory birds. The interaction helped participants understand the role of wetlands in maintaining ecological balance and the need for sustained conservation efforts.

The Event was attended by DC Bandipora Indu Kanwal Chib as Chief Guest along with District Information Officer, DySP HQ, and many other officers and Officials. Students from Government Degree College Bandipora, Government Degree College Sumbal, and various schools across the district participated enthusiastically, making the programme an engaging learning experience. The activity also reinforced the link between environmental stewardship and national pride, in line with the spirit of Vande Mataram.

The initiative reflects WUCMA’s continued commitment to conservation education and community engagement, particularly among the youth, to foster long-term protection of Wular Lake and its biodiversity.
