Srinagar, September 6: The Wildlife Department on Friday evening arrested four persons in the Shallabugh Wetland Conservation Reserve for attempting to hunt water birds, marking a significant success in its ongoing crackdown against poaching.
The operation was carried out around 6:30 pm on September 5, when a patrolling team of the Shallabugh Range led by Block Officer Ajaz Ahmad intercepted two boats inside the wetland.
Officials said the accused were apprehended on the spot, and officials seized the boats, hunted birds, live cartridges, and used shells. Conducted under near-dark conditions, the action was described by officials as a testament to the courage and determination of the field staff who ensured that the offenders did not escape.
Deputy Conservator of Forests (Wildlife Wetlands Kashmir), Altaf Hussain, while confirming the arrests to Kashmir Convener, praised the department’s staff for their swift action. He said the late-hour operation reflected the strong resolve of the department to protect Kashmir’s wetlands. “Evening and morning patrols have been intensified, particularly with the migratory bird season approaching. Anyone attempting to hunt migratory birds will be dealt with strictly under the Wildlife Protection Act,” Hussain said.
This development follows an earlier operation in Wular Lake this year, where four persons were booked for attempting to hunt waterfowl.
The Shallabugh Wetland, recognized as a Ramsar site of international importance, remains central to conservation efforts. Officials said enhanced patrolling and community vigilance will continue to safeguard the habitat of both migratory and resident bird species.
