Voting for NC was difficult decision: MLA Parra

Srinagar, Oct 25: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) MLA Waheed-ur-Rehman Para has described his party’s support for the National Conference (NC) candidate in the Rajya Sabha elections as a “difficult decision,” taken in the larger interest of Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking exclusively with Kashmir Convener, Para emphasized that the PDP owes no debt to the NC. “We don’t owe the NC anything. However, we believed that for the larger interest, this was a moment to vote for unity,” he stated. “We have done our part by voting in favour of the National Conference candidate, despite that party’s traditional opposition to us.”
Para clarified that the move followed a directive from PDP President Mehbooba Mufti. “We are from a different party; by setting aside our ideological differences, we have voted for a party that is traditionally against us. Therefore, we have to answer to our own conscience,” he said. He added that while the PDP has fulfilled its role, the question of who committed errors in the political process remains for others to consider.
Responding to criticisms from JKPC president Sajad Lone, Para acknowledged the differing opinions while standing by his party’s action. “He has his own perspective, but we did what we felt was right,” Para said.
In reaction to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s remarks that some MLAs betrayed the NC during the polls, Para said the allegations also raise questions about the NC itself.
“There may be accusations, but this also raises questions about the NC MLAs, as we don’t know who voted for the BJP candidate,” he added.
