Jammu, Feb 12: National Conference MLA Dr Sajjad Shafi on Thursday urged the government to transfer the defunct Trade Facilitation Centre (TFC) in Uri to the Tourism Department, saying the border township has significant potential for pilgrimage, eco and border tourism.

Speaking outside the Legislative Assembly, Shafi said the matter was raised during a board meeting with the Chief Minister and that the government has assured steps to boost tourist inflow into the area.

“The Trade Facilitation Centre is not functioning. We requested the Chief Minister that it should be handed over to the Tourism Department,” Shafi said. “Our focus is on border tourism, pilgrimage tourism and eco-tourism. The government has assured that tourist numbers in Uri will be increased.”

The MLA said improved connectivity has opened new possibilities, citing the road linking Gulmarg to Benali via Tarkanjan, which connects to Uri. He urged authorities to bring the stretch onto the official tourism map.

Highlighting ecological attractions, Shafi pointed to the presence of the endangered Markhor in the Lachipora and Limber wildlife sanctuaries, calling them major draws for eco-tourists. He also listed religious and heritage sites including the Pandav temple, Chhattipal Shahi shrine, Baba Rangi Imam, Baba Kazi Naag and the border command post as destinations requiring focused development.

“The government has promised action. The Trade Facilitation Centre should be utilised for tourism purposes,” he said.

Shafi further called for reopening tourist spots that were shut following security operations, stating that revival of tourism would provide employment opportunities for local youth.
