PULWAMA, October 2: Residents of Tumlahal village in Litter-Lassipora block of Pulwama have urged the visiting Area Officer of the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD), Government of India, to visit the area and conduct an impartial inquiry into the implementation of MGNREGA and other rural development schemes.

The appeal comes during the four-day visit of MoRD Deputy Director General Altaf Hussain Haji, the designated Area Officer for MoRD schemes, to Jammu and Kashmir from September 30 to October 3 to monitor the implementation and progress of various rural development programmes.

In a representation submitted by the inhabitants, residents alleged that some beneficiaries had been favoured in the implementation of government schemes, while several genuine works had remained pending for years despite repeated applications.

They particularly sought an inquiry into the construction of an irrigation water channel in Tumlahal, which, according to the residents, remained pending for nearly six years despite repeated requests.

The residents said the work was finally taken up last month but was subsequently stopped following objections raised by two locals. They alleged that the concerned authorities had failed to take effective action to resolve the issue and ensure completion of the work.

The residents have urged the MoRD officer to examine the official records relating to the project, including applications, sanctions, work orders, expenditure and the reasons for the delay and subsequent stoppage.

They have also sought verification of beneficiaries under MGNREGA and other rural development schemes to ensure that government benefits reach eligible and deserving households.

The inhabitants said their representation was aimed at seeking transparency and accountability and requested that the matter be examined on the basis of official records and ground verification.
