Tribal girls weave threads of empowerment in Govt’s Carpet Institute

Bandipora, Jan 25 : In an initiative of Indian initiative of carpet technology Srinager of Jammu and Kashmir, the tribal girls in Bandipora village are getting trained in carpet weaving with the aim to make them financially independent.
Around 20 girls are in the center which is the first ever center providing skills to the local tribal girls in the area. The center has been established by Indian institute of carpet technology Srinagar and has been sponsored by the National Backward classes financial and development corporation.
Shegufta, one of the local girls, said that we spend our free time here, earlier we used to sit in our homes, now we are getting trained with carpet weaving skills from which we can earn and become independent.
"The center is the first ever center in our tribal village in which the girls are getting trained by professional trainers. We are learning new skills here for which we are thankful to the government for this initiative," she said.
Another local girl Saima Akhther, who is a final year student of Bachelor's of Arts in Government Degree college Bandipora said that it is important to have some skills in today's era especially for girls.
She further added that the center is bringing positive change in her society as the girls are coming forward and enrolling themselves in the center.
"We did not have many opportunities to learn the skills. The tribal girls also want to be self independent but less opportunities push them back," she stated.
"The government aims to train these girls with new skills so that they can earn their livelihood for themselves and teach more girls in future," Maqbool Dar, a trainer in the carpet center said.
