Gulmarg, Feb 23: Jammu and Kashmir Sports Minister Satish Sharma asserted on Monday that terrorism will not be allowed to hinder the region’s march towards peace and prosperity.

Inaugurating the 6th Khelo India Winter Games amidst a vibrant atmosphere, Minister Sharma addressed a gathering of athletes and tourists, making it clear that recent challenges have only strengthened the administration’s resolve to promote sports and tourism.

“Terror will not dictate our future. The recent Pahalgam incident tested us, but we will give a strong reply by hosting events like these. Tourism will thrive here,” Sharma said, draped in winter gear against the stunning white landscape.

Describing the Khelo India Games as a symbol of the region’s unbreakable spirit, the Minister, as per Kashmir Convener, emphasized that Gulmarg is emerging as a premier destination for winter sports. He noted that the participation of athletes from across the country in the event sends a powerful message of national integration.

“When you see young athletes skiing on these slopes, you are witnessing the future of Jammu and Kashmir. Sports will lead the positive change here. Tourism represents peace, and peace represents progress,” the Minister added.

Sharma announced that the government is making significant investments in sports infrastructure, not just in Gulmarg but also in other potential destinations, including Sonamarg, Bhaderwah, and areas across the Pir Panjal range, to nurture local talent in disciplines like skiing and snowboarding.

The Minister also highlighted the promotion of homestays in rural and high-altitude areas. “We want local communities to be direct beneficiaries of this peace dividend. When tourists stay in local homes, it builds bridges and brings prosperity,” he said.

“We are strong enough to face challenges. Sports and tourism together will drive the economic future of Jammu and Kashmir, and no force can stop that now,” he added.
