Shopian, April 3: Residents of Zainapora area in Shopian district have reported a suspected fungal infection in a natural spring, alleging that nearly 50 percent of the fish in the water body have died over the past few days.

Locals said the remaining fish are also at risk, raising concerns about possible environmental and health implications if the issue is not addressed promptly. The spring is a key water source in the area, and residents expressed concern over the condition of what they described as a major spring in Zainapora, known for its numerous natural water bodies.

A resident said the situation has been deteriorating and that repeated appeals to authorities have not elicited a response. “We have informed officials several times about such incidents, but no team has visited the site so far. If immediate action is not taken, more damage may occur,” he said.

Residents have urged the District Administration Shopian to conduct water testing and initiate cleaning and restoration measures to prevent further loss of aquatic life. They also appealed to the Sub Divisional Magistrate Zainapora, Bilal Ahmad, to visit the site and oversee necessary intervention.

Authorities had not issued an official statement on the matter at the time of filing this report.
