SSP Bandipora Inaugurates Altaf Memorial Cricket Tournament

Families of fallen police personnel join opening ceremony; 64 teams in fray

Bandipora, September 10: The Martyr Altaf Memorial Cricket Tournament began today with a spirited inaugural ceremony at Sports Stadium Bandipora. The event was inaugurated by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bandipora, Harmeet Singh Mehta, JKPS, in the presence of senior officers from Bandipora Police, the Army, and the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF).

Organised by District Police Bandipora in collaboration with the Cricket Association Bandipora, the tournament has drawn an overwhelming response with 64 teams from across the district set to compete on a knockout basis. The inaugural clash was held between Alfa Cricket Club Bandipora and Wullar Sports Hajin, drawing enthusiastic crowds of cricket fans.

The opening ceremony was marked by the participation of local dignitaries, cricket lovers, and family members of police martyrs, who were present to pay tribute to the brave personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty.

The tournament is named in memory of Sub-Inspector Altaf Ahmad Dar, popularly known as Altaf Laptop. A highly decorated counter-insurgency officer of Jammu and Kashmir Police, he was renowned for his exceptional skills in technology-driven investigations, particularly mobile and digital surveillance.

Rising through the ranks from constable to sub-inspector, Altaf played a vital role in neutralising top terrorist commanders and solving several high-profile cases. He was killed in action during an operation against Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists in Bandipora in October 2015. Remembered as one of the Valley’s most resourceful and courageous officers, his legacy continues to inspire many, with institutions and events dedicated in his honour.

Speaking on the occasion, SSP Bandipora Harmeet Singh Mehta said the Police Martyrs’ Memorial Cricket Tournament is not only a platform to honor the supreme sacrifices of martyrs but also a way to engage youth in healthy sporting activities. “The participation of 64 teams is a testament to the immense enthusiasm and sporting spirit of Bandipora’s youth,” he said.

The Cricket Association Bandipora expressed gratitude to the District Police for their collaboration in hosting the tournament, terming it a significant step in combining remembrance with youth engagement through sports.
