India’s relentless pursuit of space exploration reached a historic milestone on 16th January 2025 with the successful completion of the Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX). This achievement catapults India into an elite group of nations—joining the United States, Russia, and China—capable of executing space docking operations, a technological feat that opens new frontiers in space science.
The launch of SpaDeX on 30th December 2024 aboard the PSLV-C60 marked the beginning of this groundbreaking mission. Designed as a cost-effective demonstrator, SpaDeX showcases critical capabilities in rendezvous, docking, and undocking of spacecraft. The success of SpaDeX lies in its innovative use of two small satellites—SDX01 (Chaser) and SDX02 (Target)—each equipped with cutting-edge technologies, including androgynous docking mechanisms and autonomous inter-satellite communication links.
