Srinagar, Mar 24: A scholar from north Kashmir’s Sopore has presented a data-driven account of the changing status of women in Jammu and Kashmir at the United Nations Human Rights Council, asserting that the region’s narrative is one of measurable transition rather than just conflict.

Darakshan Hassan Bhat, a gender studies scholar and founder of the Kashmir Women’s Organisation, addressed the 61st session of the UNHRC in Geneva earlier this month. Owing to ongoing conflicts in several Western nations, she participated virtually.

“Due to the war, I was added virtually,” Bhat said, stating that her intervention steered clear of grievances and instead focused on empirical indicators.

Her presentation traced the evolving lives of women and girls in J&K through parameters such as education, healthcare, employment, and the digital divide.

“The presentation highlighted the broader trajectory of women’s empowerment in the region, reflecting both the strides made and the ongoing journey toward inclusive and equitable development,” she told Kashmir Convener.

Bhat, who combines academic research with grassroots engagement, said her work aims to bridge policy discussions with on-ground realities. At the international forum, she underscored that voices from conflict-affected regions often face unaddressed barriers, including physical participation.

She described her intervention as an effort to present a balanced picture of a region frequently viewed through a narrow lens.

“The journey towards inclusive development continues, but the strides are real and are being led by women themselves,” she said.

Bhat has been involved in initiatives promoting women’s participation at the community level, advocating for recognition of the everyday leadership roles women play across sectors.

The UNHRC session was attended by representatives from various countries and organisations, focusing on human rights issues and global development challenges.
