Jammu, Feb 14: Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) MLA Sheikh Khurshid on Saturday lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over alleged remarks branding Kashmiris as “land grabbers”, accusing the party of hypocrisy and claiming it has lost political ground in Jammu.
The Langate legislator was responding to recent statements by a BJP MLA on land-related issues.
“We want to know, the member who raised this question and said that Kashmiri people are land grabbers — we want him to answer question number 211. You have occupied eight acres of land. You answer that,” Khurshid said while speaking to reporters.
Without naming individuals directly, he also referred to senior BJP leaders, alleging that questions were being raised about land linked to certain party figures.
“You answer about your leader whose house is on JDA land. His former deputy chief minister, who is currently the LG of Ladakh — questions are being raised about his residence,” he said.
Khurshid alleged that the BJP was targeting ordinary people while ignoring allegations against influential individuals.
“It is not like poor people with small residential plots are the only ones involved. Commercial complexes and land used for business purposes are also part of the issue,” he claimed.
The AIP MLA further criticised both the BJP and the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference (NC), accusing them of speaking differently inside and outside the Assembly.
“Especially these two big parties talk about one thing inside the House and another outside,” he said.
Questioning the BJP’s current political standing in Jammu despite past electoral success, Khurshid remarked, “If the people of Jammu sent two MPs and 29 MLAs to the BJP earlier, what do they have now?”
He also accused the party of indulging in divisive politics. “Hindu, Muslim, Kashmiri, Jammu, Non-Kashmiri — what else does the BJP have?” he asked.
