Sericulture Department Launches Silkworm Seed Distribution in Gurez Under Tribal Plan
Gurez, May 27: The Department of Sericulture has initiated the distribution of silkworm seed in the Gurez region as part of its Tribal Plan, aiming to promote sericulture as a sustainable livelihood among tribal households.
Department officials visited Gurez and distributed silkworm seed to selected beneficiaries, identified in coordination with local authorities. The beneficiaries, primarily from tribal communities, were also provided with basic training and technical guidance to support cocoon rearing.
Officials said the initiative is part of a broader strategy to extend sericulture activities to remote and tribal areas with suitable agro-climatic conditions. Gurez has been identified as a promising location for cocoon production, with the potential to boost local incomes.
The department will continue to monitor the rearing process and offer technical support throughout the production cycle. Future interventions will be planned based on the outcomes of this pilot phase, officials added.
