Senior Journalist and Author S. M. Shah Nawaz Passes Away

New Delhi, March 7: Senior journalist and author S. M. Shah Nawaz passed away last Thursday. He had edited the Urdu fortnightly Mustaqbil for more than 40 years.

Born in the mid-1930s in the princely state of Jaipur, Shah Nawaz hailed from Sultanpur village in Palwal. During the Partition of India, his family chose not to migrate but became refugees in their own country. For several years, Rampur in the state of Uttar Pradesh became their new home.

He had a deep interest in short story writing and later worked on theatre projects as well, collaborating with eminent personalities such as Ebrahim Alkazi. His work included contributions to several stage productions, including well-known Urdu plays such as Razia Sultana. His short stories were published in leading magazines of the time, including Dharmyug, Sarika, and Kadambini.

He also served as editor of the popular film magazine Sushma and also as editor of reputed journal Tajir which was published by Mohd. Sarwar Ayubi, followed by Rakt Daan, a publication launched during the 1962 war to encourage blood donation.

In 1982, he founded the popular Urdu fortnightly Mustaqbil, dedicated to the cause of building a strong, united, and prosperous India. He continued his good work with dedication until his last breath and passed away on March 5, 2026, at the RML Nursing Home.
