Baramulla, Dec 27: Security forces conducted a swift and professional operation on Saturday, safely destroying a suspicious bag discovered on the Srinagar-Baramulla National Highway and neutralizing a potential threat.

A senior army official told Kashmir Convener that the decisive action underscores the persistent high alert maintained by security agencies to ensure a peaceful environment during the New Year holiday period. “Our forces remain vigilant and proactive. This operation reflects our commitment to preempt any threat to public safety,” the official said.

The incident occurred in the Choora area of North Kashmir. Upon identifying the unattended bag, security forces immediately established a security cordon and halted traffic in both directions. A specialized Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) was promptly dispatched to the location.

Operating under stringent safety protocols, the BDS team examined and subsequently destroyed the bag in a controlled detonation as a precautionary measure. Following a thorough assessment, authorities confirmed the elimination of any immediate danger. “After exhaustive clearance procedures, the highway was reopened for public use,” the army official confirmed.

This operation is part of heightened security preparations across Jammu and Kashmir, driven by specific intelligence inputs indicating attempts to disrupt peace during the festive season. The measures are deemed critical as the region, including premier tourist destinations like Gulmarg, experiences a significant influx of visitors celebrating the New Year amidst recent snowfall.

To ensure the safety of tourists and residents, the Jammu and Kashmir Police, in coordination with central security forces, has intensified area domination exercises and anti-sabotage drills at key venues.

A senior police officer speaking to Kashmir Convener detailed the ongoing efforts, stating, “Our joint teams are conducting meticulous checks at major intersections, marketplaces, and around vital installations. These include comprehensive vehicle inspections, document verification, and premises searches, augmented by sniffer dog squads.” The officer emphasized to this newspaper that with the expected surge in tourist activity, such proactive deployments will continue uninterrupted.

Security agencies have been placed on maximum alert statewide. Authorities are implementing a dual strategy of enhanced human intelligence gathering and advanced technological surveillance, particularly in sensitive sectors along the Line of Control (LoC), including Keran, Machil, Karna, Uri, and Tangdhar.

A top security official elaborated on the technological integration, noting the deployment of high-resolution 360-degree CCTV cameras and electronic sensors for continuous monitoring. “Our personnel are equipped with state-of-the-art systems to detect and preempt any suspicious movement or infiltration attempt. This technological augmentation has significantly strengthened our defensive and surveillance grid,” he affirmed.

Reiterating the unwavering commitment to security, a senior defense official said, “We are resolved to ensure a completely secure and peaceful environment for all. Any attempt by adversarial elements to disturb the prevailing tranquility will be met with a robust and immediate response.”
