Pampore, April 15: The Regional Development Forum Pampore on Tuesday convened a meeting to deliberate on the long-pending demand for district status and various developmental concerns in the area.

The meeting, held at Royal Grill Restaurant, was attended by forum members and prominent citizens, who engaged in detailed discussions on infrastructure development, public services, and overall community welfare. Participants emphasized the need for coordinated efforts to address local challenges and ensure balanced and sustainable growth.

Several suggestions were put forward to improve civic amenities, strengthen infrastructure, and enhance public participation in development initiatives. The forum reiterated its commitment to working closely with government authorities and stakeholders to accelerate development and pursue the demand for district status.

Senior member Mukhtar Ahmad Tantray said the meeting aimed to reinforce the demand for granting district status to Pampore. He noted that despite being perceived as a small town, Pampore comprises three tehsil offices and covers a vast geographical area, making it administratively viable for district status.

He further highlighted that Pampore has seen increasing settlement from Srinagar residents, particularly in areas like Tulbagh and Zaffron Colony. He added that regions separated by the Jhelum River have expressed willingness to be administratively reconnected with Pampore, and parts of Tehsil B.K. Pora could also be considered.

Emphasizing Pampore’s global recognition for saffron, Tantray said the town has a distinct identity and should not remain administratively dependent on Srinagar or Pulwama. He urged the government to seriously consider the demand for district status.
