Gurugram, August 29: REC Limited, a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Power, observed National Sports Day on Friday with an elaborate celebration at its corporate headquarters in Gurugram. The day, which commemorates the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, was marked by the presence of eminent personalities from the fields of sports, administration, and motivation.

The programme was presided over by REC Chairman and Managing Director, Shri Jitendra Srivastava, who extended a warm welcome to the distinguished guests. The event was graced by Sujata Chaturvedi, who joined as the Chief Guest, and renowned sportspersons and experts including Olympian and Khel Ratna awardee Manu Bhaker, Captain Dharamveer, a motivational speaker and former Army officer, and Nachhatar Singh Johal, CEO – Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) of the Sports Authority of India.

The dignitaries underscored the importance of integrating sports and fitness into everyday life. Their messages focused on values such as discipline, teamwork, and perseverance—qualities that, they said, were as relevant in the workplace as they are on the playing field.

The event was organised on the theme “One Hour, On the Field of Sports,” which aims to encourage individuals to dedicate at least an hour daily to physical activity as a step towards disease prevention and healthier lifestyles. Employees of REC participated in interactive sessions and were urged to adopt sports not only as recreation but also as a way to build resilience and camaraderie.

Addressing the gathering, CMD Srivastava said that the celebration was not just a tribute to Major Dhyan Chand but also an affirmation of REC’s commitment to fostering a culture of health and well-being among its workforce. “Sports bring discipline and fitness, but most importantly they bring people together as a team. That spirit is at the heart of REC’s work culture,” he noted.

Official spokesperson said the celebration reflected REC’s broader effort to blend professional excellence with holistic employee welfare. Officials said that the company will continue to support initiatives that encourage employees to balance work with fitness and active living.

National Sports Day is observed across the country on August 29 every year to honour Major Dhyan Chand, who is widely regarded as the “Hockey Magician” for his unmatched contribution to Indian hockey.
