Bandipora, April 11: Prof. (Dr.) Syeda Afshana from the Media Education Research Centre (MERC), University of Kashmir, cautioned students against the growing phenomenon of “brain rot” caused by excessive and unproductive use of mobile phones, urging them to adopt a more meaningful and responsible approach to technology.

Addressing students and faculty at PM Shri Government Secondary School Laharwalpora, she described technology as a “double-edged sword,” capable of enabling knowledge and innovation when used wisely, but equally harmful if misused. She emphasized the need to move beyond passive consumption of digital content and instead engage in purposeful learning.

Encouraging curiosity and critical thinking, Dr. Afshana urged students to cultivate the habit of questioning both inside and outside the classroom. She highlighted the powerful role of media in shaping perceptions and stressed the importance of understanding its influence in today’s digital landscape.

Responding to a query from a student, she delivered a special message for girls, encouraging them to value the trust of their families and remain disciplined and focused in pursuit of their goals. “Dream big and work persistently,” she advised, inspiring students to aim high and stay committed.

Earlier, faculty member Viqar Ahmad welcomed the guest and underscored the importance of such interactive sessions in broadening students’ perspectives. Head of Institution Javaid Jawad, in his concluding remarks, thanked Dr. Afshana for her insightful session, noting that her guidance would leave a lasting impact on students.

The session, which also included an interactive question-and-answer segment, focused on media literacy, responsible digital engagement, and identifying misinformation online. Students actively participated, sharing their experiences and concerns related to social media and mobile phone usage.

The programme concluded with a renewed awareness among students about the importance of using technology constructively, with participants terming the session both timely and impactful in today’s digital age.
