Photojournalists sustain injuries in clashes near gunfight site
Shopian, Jan 22: Five photojournalists were injured while covering clashes between the protesters and the government forces near the site of a gunfight in southern Shopian district on Tuesday.
Reports said that four photojournalists were hit by pellets fired by the forces near the site of the gunfight in Shirmal area of Shopian where three militants were killed in the gunfight.
The injured journalists were identified as Waseem Andrabi who works with Hindustan Times newspaper, Nisar-ul-Haq (Rising Kashmir), Mir Burhan, Aijaz Rashid and Qaisar Mir. Witnesses said that these scribes sustained pellet injuries and were shifted in the hospital.
Pertinently, intense clashes erupted in the area soon after the gunfight broke out in the village. To dissipate the protesters, government forces used tear-smoke shells and pellets near the gunfight sight.
Meanwhile, journalist fraternity has condemned the use of pellets on journalists. They said it has become a routine for Forces to target those who perform their professional duties. (CNS)
