Online Gambling Destroying Society, Corroding Moral Fabric: Mirwaiz
Srinagar, May 26: Expressing grave concern over the rise of online gambling in the Valley, Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir, Dr. Umer Farooq, on Sunday described the trend as a growing social menace that is rapidly luring thousands into addiction under the guise of entertainment, wreaking havoc on families and eroding the moral foundations of society.
Calling it as destructive as substance abuse, Mirwaiz said that online gambling demands urgent and serious intervention. “This menace is overtaking our society, especially the youth. It is not just damaging individuals, but also corroding our collective moral and spiritual fabric,” he said.
Mirwaiz stressed that development cannot be limited to economic progress or infrastructure. “What purpose does development serve if people are left morally weakened and spiritually lost? A comprehensive strategy must be adopted to tackle such social evils,” he said.
He emphasized that the issue cannot be addressed by the government alone. “Religious scholars, community leaders, and civil society must also shoulder responsibility. There is a pressing need to raise awareness rooted in our religious and ethical values. Every available medium must be used to reach people with this important message.”
Addressing youth during a Nikah Khutba, Mirwaiz highlighted the importance of building one’s life on the foundations of Islamic character, self-control, and social responsibility, especially in the face of such rising challenges.
In a strong appeal to the judiciary, he urged the courts to take serious note of the issue and impose an immediate ban on online gambling before it causes further damage.
“This is a test for our society. We must act collectively and decisively to safeguard our future generations,” Mirwaiz added.
