Jammu, June 6: Northern Railway’s Jammu Division has successfully transported more than 111 tonnes of Jammu and Kashmir’s world-famous cherry to various parts of the country through rail services this season, providing growers with a faster and cost-effective means of reaching national markets.

An Official spokesperson while talking to Kashmir Convener, said that the cherry consignments have been transported through SLR/VP-based rail services from Jammu and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra railway stations.

The initiative aims to ensure better returns for farmers and orchardists while reducing transportation costs. For perishable produce like cherries, the Railways is utilising SLR and VP coaches to facilitate safe and timely delivery to markets across the country.

To support growers, Northern Railway is providing booking, loading and cold-chain facilities at Jammu and Katra railway stations, ensuring hassle-free transportation of horticultural produce, he added.

Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Jammu, Uchit Singhal, said that connecting Jammu and Kashmir’s cherry growers to national markets remains a priority for Jammu Division.

“Transportation of more than 111 tonnes of cherry by rail reflects the growing trust of farmers in Railway services. SLR/VP-based transportation is not only saving time but also helping increase farmers’ income,” he said.

He added that Jammu Division will continue to provide special facilities and quick booking arrangements for horticultural produce in the future to strengthen the ‘Farm to Market’ initiative.

Northern Railway has appealed to farmers and orchardists to make maximum use of the facility for transportation of cherries and other perishable agricultural products.
