New voters take pledge at National Voters’ Day event in Sumbal

Sumbal, Jan 25: National Voters’ Day was celebrated on Sunday at Dak Bungalow Sumbal in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district to mark the 16th National Voters’ Day, with a focus on voter awareness and strengthening democratic participation.
The programme was attended by Electoral Registration Officer Sonawari, Murtaza Ahmad Sheikh, who was the chief guest on the occasion. Tehsildar Hajin, Booth Level Officers (BLOs), officials from the election department, newly enrolled voters and students also participated in the event.
Addressing the gathering, ERO Murtaza Ahmad Sheikh underlined the importance of achieving a 100 per cent Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) coverage in the Sonawari constituency. He said National Voters’ Day serves as an important platform to educate citizens about their right to vote and the role of informed participation in strengthening the democratic system.
He stressed the need for transparent, inclusive and foolproof electoral registration in the district and said higher voter participation is essential for ensuring a strong and vibrant democracy.
Speakers at the event highlighted the significance of the day’s theme and emphasised that the right to vote is a fundamental democratic right of every citizen who has attained the age of 18 years.
On the occasion, Murtaza Ahmad Sheikh administered a pledge to newly enrolled voters, students, officers and officials, urging them to uphold the democratic traditions of the country and to ensure the conduct of free, fair and peaceful elections.
Voter identity cards were also distributed among newly registered voters during the programme.
