NC Accuses Mehbooba Mufti of “Political Deception” Over PDP Legacy

Convener News Desk

Srinagar, May 16: Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) leader and constituency secretary North Kashmir, Adv. Nazir Malik, on Friday launched a sharp attack on former Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti, accusing her of promoting what he termed a “false and hollow narrative” regarding the political legacy of late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.

In a statement issued to Kashmir Convener on Monday, advocate Malik questioned the PDP’s political record and alleged that the party’s alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had altered the political and social landscape of Jammu and Kashmir. He said the consequences of decisions taken during that period were still being faced by the people of the Union Territory.

Malik stated that the public continues to seek clarity on what he described as the “so-called vision” of late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. He alleged that beyond political slogans and speeches, the PDP leadership failed to provide stability and public confidence.

The National Conference leader accused Mehbooba Mufti of distancing herself from responsibility for developments that took place during the PDP-BJP coalition government. He claimed that people in Jammu and Kashmir remain politically aware and continue to remember the political decisions and alliances formed during that period.

He further alleged that several former legislators shifted political loyalties over time for personal and political interests. Referring to former minister Altaf Bukhari and political realignments in the region, Malik claimed that certain political figures had regrouped under different platforms following changes in political circumstances.

Questioning the PDP’s governance record, Malik said the party had failed to deliver meaningful achievements for youth empowerment, institutional strengthening, public confidence, or political stability. He accused Mehbooba Mufti of relying on “emotional rhetoric” and “selective memory” in her political approach.

Malik asserted that the people of Kashmir could distinguish between what he described as “sincere public service” and “opportunistic politics.” He said Jammu and Kashmir requires leadership focused on peace, development, dignity, and democratic values.

The remarks come amid continuing political exchanges between regional parties in Jammu and Kashmir ahead of evolving political developments in the Union Territory. Political leaders from different parties have increasingly intensified criticism of each other over past alliances, governance records, and approaches towards public issues.

The PDP has not issued any immediate response to the statements made by the National Conference leader.
