National Girl Child Day celebrated in Gurez Valley
Dawar, January 24: Indian Army stationed at Dawar in Gurez Valley on Monday celebrated National Girl Child Day with the Civil population of the area.
In a statement issued to Kashmir Convener, Official Spokesperson said a special lecture-cum-felicitation ceremony was conducted at the Log Hut Cafe by the Indian army to foster woman empowerment in the valley. The motivational lecture, taken by an army lady officer, highlighted the importance of woman empowerment, women health and upgradation of education and vocational training for the women folk of remote areas such as Gurez.
He said presently, there are two stitching centres and one computer centre which are being run for a total of 40 women as part of skill development initiatives undertaken by the army in Dawar. The girl child achievers of Gurez and the teachers of all the three centres were also felicitated during the event.
In India, the national girl child day is observed every year on 24 January. The day aims to focus on the inequalities faced by girls, to promote education, health & nutrition of the girl child, and to spread awareness about the rights of a girl child. “The Indian army in Gurez has been committed for this cause and has undertaken numerous such initiatives for the empowerment of women which have been lauded by the locals and has provided an alternate source of income for the woman folk,” reads the statement.
