New Delhi, Sept 21: The Ministry of Defence has signed a Rs 586-crore contract with Accurate Industrial Controls Private Limited for the procurement of Auxiliary Power Units (APUs) for the Indian Army’s T-72 and T-90 tanks.
The contract was signed in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh in New Delhi on Monday.
An APU provides an alternate source of electrical power for critical tank systems, including the fire-control system, firing circuit and gun-stabilisation system, besides other onboard equipment.
The Ministry of Defence said induction of the indigenously developed APUs will strengthen the operational readiness, reliability and sustainability of the Army’s mechanised formations.
The procurement is also aimed at increasing the indigenous content of critical sub-systems used in armoured platforms. The project has been undertaken under the Make-II category, which supports industry-led research and development of defence equipment and systems.
The ministry said the contract demonstrates the role of indigenous research and development in taking locally developed technologies through production and eventual induction into the armed forces.
The procurement is part of the government’s broader push for greater self-reliance in defence manufacturing and reducing dependence on imported critical equipment and components. – (PIB)
