Lt Governor takes on-spot assessment of development & beautification of Jhelum River on the lines of Sabarmati Riverfront
Jhelum Riverfront project to open up new avenues for tourism sector, making Srinagar city more vibrant: LG
SRINAGAR, AUGUST 09: Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha today visited the iconic Zero Bridge and took on-spot assessment of development and beautification of Jhelum River on the lines of Sabarmati Riverfront.
Jhelum river reflects the culture and history of the valley. It is important to ensure scientific execution of work keeping in view the aesthetic value of the river, besides taking the ecology factor into consideration, the Lt Governor told the officials.
Once completed, the project will open up new avenues for tourism sector, thus making Srinagar city more vibrant, observed the Lt Governor.
During his visit, the Lt Governor enquired about the mechanism being laid down for the development of upcoming attractions and facilities to be made available to the visitors.
He also took stock of the works being executed under different components of the project including the development of pathways along Jhelum revetment, public utilities, embankment along riverbank, parks, Wi-fi zones and illumination work.
The Lt Governor passed specific directions to the concerned officers for completion of the project within the set timelines without any delay.
On being informed that the project is being executed in convergence of various departments, the Lt Governor directed for maintaining proper inter-departmental coordination, adopting best practices, and applying the learning gained from the experts for getting desired results on ground.
It was informed that in the first phase, 2 km stretch from Zero Bridge to Amira Kadal will be developed by the month of September.
Officials of Irrigation & Flood Control Department and Floriculture Department also briefed the Lt Governor about the roadmap prepared by their respective departments.
Sh. Keshav Varma, Chairman, Sabarmati River Front Development Corporation Ltd (SRFDCL) is sharing his expertise for the development of Jhelum River.
Pertinently, the UT Government is giving impetus to the speedy completion of all the other important water projects. Tawi Riverfront has also took momentum now and experts were roped in for the execution of this prestigious project.
Sh. Dheeraj Gupta, Principal Secretary to the Government, H&UDD; Sh. Pandurang K. Pole, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir; Sh. Mohammad Aijaz, Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, and concerned officers accompanied the Lt Governor.

Sports Council, JK Hockey Association organize hockey match
Advisor Khan reaffirms govt's commitment of sports infra promotion in all panchayats
JAMMU, AUGUST 09: As part of ongoing week long Independence day celebrations, Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council in collaboration with JK Hockey Association organised a hockey match at Green-field Ghandhinagar Jammu here today.
Advisor to Lieutenant Governor, Farooq Ahmad Khan, who is also the Vice President of J&K Sports Council, was the chief guest on the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, Farooq Khan lauded the performance of both Men and Women National Hockey teams who represented country in recently concluded Tokyo 2020 Olympics held in Japan and congratulated all for winning the bronze medal after a long gap of 41 years.
Advisor Farooq Khan hoped that players of J&K hockey teams will also perform with same zeal at both national and international level whenever opportunity comes up their way.
Farooq Khan also appreciated the role of Sports Council in promotion of sports in the region. "Government is committed to develop sports infrastructure in every Panchayat to provide equal opportunity to all towards harnessing their unique sports talent to the fullest", he added.
Today's match was played between Jammu Reds and Jammu Blues Girl teams wherein both the teams sweated out hard in the field but it was Jammu Blues who won the match.
The tournament is being organised under the supervision of Dr. Zafar Iqbal, Chief Accounts Officer, Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council and officials of the J&K Hockey Association.
The players and spectators appreciated the efforts of Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council for providing equal opportunity not only in both divisions of the union territory but equally striking the gender balance as well.
Meanwhile, hockey sticks were also distributed among the teams and vote of thanks was presented by Ashok Singh, Divisional Sports Officer Jammu.
Others present on the occasion included S P Singh, Satish Gupta, Satish Chopra, sports enthusiasts besides coaches.
