Phagwara, October 14: Lovely Professional University (LPU) has received the Platinum Green Impact Award 2026, the highest recognition under the Seed Balls for Sustainable Campuses Initiative organised by the National EduTrust of India.
According to the university, the initiative involved 422 students from 27 academic schools, who prepared 8,572 seed balls using 11 tree species and dispersed them across five geo-tagged locations in Kapurthala, Amritsar and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar districts of Punjab.
Of the total seed balls prepared, 7,643, or 89.2 per cent, contained native tree species, while the remaining 929 used naturalised species. The native varieties included Karanj, Shisham, Amaltas, Kachnar, Moringa, Kadam, Jamun and Arjun. Imli, Gulmohar and Pink Shower were among the naturalised species used.
The university said 6,072 seed balls were dispersed at field sites, while 2,500 were distributed through Green Gift packets. The identified locations included the LPU campus and adjoining areas in Phagwara, the AH1 corridor in Kapurthala, Budha Theh near Beas, Lahorimal on the AH1 corridor in Amritsar and the Chandigarh-Jalandhar Expressway at Balachaur.
The sites covered approximately 130 kilometres of green corridors, including campus green belts, highway stretches, riverine embankments, roadside verges and expressway green belts. Five awareness activities were also conducted to promote understanding of biodiversity, environmental responsibility and climate action.
Dr Ashok Kumar Mittal, Rajya Sabha MP and LPU Founder Chancellor, said sustainability should extend beyond classrooms and institutional reports to practical action and responsible choices. He said the recognition reinforced the importance of connecting education with responsibility towards nature and society.
The National EduTrust of India initiative involved around 350 institutions nationwide, which collectively prepared more than 10 lakh seed balls and dispersed approximately eight lakh, according to the university.
LPU said the award followed its recognition in the Times Higher Education Sustainability Impact Rankings 2026, where it was placed 23rd globally and ranked highest among Indian institutions for its contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The seed-ball initiative aimed to translate environmental awareness into practical student participation in biodiversity conservation and ecological restoration.
