Srinagar, April 2: The Literary Forum Bandipora has welcomed the demand raised by Member of Parliament Choudhary Ramzan for granting classical language status to Kashmiri, describing the move as significant for the preservation and promotion of the region’s linguistic heritage.

In a statement issued to Kashmir Convener on Thursday, the forum said Kashmiri represents a long-standing linguistic and cultural tradition and holds importance as a medium of expression for various literary and philosophical streams in the region.

Vice President of the forum, Mir Tariq Rasool, said the language reflects centuries of evolution and carries influences from multiple traditions, while maintaining its distinct identity.

He noted that Kashmiri has been associated with literary and spiritual traditions, including contributions from poets and scholars over time.

The forum said the demand for classical status would support efforts to preserve the language and encourage further academic and cultural engagement. It added that such recognition could facilitate research, documentation and promotion of literary works in Kashmiri.

Referring to the initiative, the forum said the issue has been raised at a national level and highlighted its relevance for safeguarding linguistic heritage.

The statement also underlined the need for institutional and governmental support to promote the language and its literary corpus. It said recognition as a classical language could open avenues for research, preservation of manuscripts and promotion of indigenous knowledge systems.

The forum urged the Government of India and concerned authorities to consider the demand and take steps towards granting classical status to Kashmiri.

It also called upon scholars, writers and cultural organisations in Jammu and Kashmir to support the initiative and contribute to efforts aimed at preserving and promoting the language.
