LG Sinha rings Farooq Abdullah; orders probe

Jammu, Mar 12: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Thursday spoke to National Conference president Farooq Abdullah and assured him of a thorough investigation into the attack on him, even as the accused was remanded to five-day police custody. The accused’s startling claim—”I have fired at him”—has deepened the mystery surrounding the incident.

Official sources told Kashmir Convener that LG Sinha contacted the veteran politician over the phone and expressed concern over his narrow escape.

LG Sinha directed Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat to conduct a comprehensive probe and ensure that those involved are brought to justice. The DGP has been asked to expedite the investigation and ensure swift legal action, they said.

Sources said that following the attack, senior officials have been put on alert. A security audit of all protectees across Jammu and Kashmir has been ordered, with strict instructions to prevent any such incidents in the future, the sources added.

The official sources further informed Kashmir Convener that the accused, identified as 63-year-old Kamal Singh Jamwal, a resident of Purani Mandi, was produced before a court here on Thursday amid tight security.

Police sought his custody, arguing that sustained interrogation was necessary to ascertain whether he acted alone or had any organisational backing.

The court granted five-day police custody and directed authorities to ensure the accused undergoes a medical check-up every 24 hours, sources added.

Meanwhile, Jamwal was being taken for a medical examination, where he reportedly told waiting journalists: “I have not done this at the behest of anyone. I have fired at him.” The remark has left investigators grappling with multiple possibilities—ranging from personal animus to a larger conspiracy.

A senior police officer told Kashmir Convener that, according to preliminary investigations, the incident took place late Wednesday evening at a wedding function in Jammu’s Greater Kailash area. As Dr. Farooq Abdullah was exiting the venue, the assailant allegedly fired from behind. However, the security cordon comprising JKP and NSG personnel reacted instantly.

“The security personnel of JKP and NSG, who were deployed with the protectee, immediately swung into action and thwarted the attempt. The accused was taken into custody and the firearm used in the crime has been recovered,” a senior police officer said.

Police have registered a case and initiated a multi-layered probe. “We are looking into all angles—personal enmity, political conspiracy, or any potential organisational backing,” the officer said.

Further investigations are ongoing and all aspects are being examined, the official added.
