Law University Belongs to Kashmir, Will Be Built in Valley, Says Sajad Lone

Jammu, Feb 3: Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Conference president and MLA Handwara Sajad Gani Lone on Tuesday strongly opposed the BJP in the Legislative Assembly over what he described as attempts to shift the National Law University out of Kashmir.

Raising the issue during Assembly proceedings, Lone asserted that the proposed National Law University is a state institution and not a central university, making Kashmir its rightful location. He said any move to relocate the university outside the region would be unacceptable and would face firm resistance.

Lone said the establishment of the law university in Kashmir was a matter of educational equity and regional rights, adding that higher education institutions should not become victims of political manoeuvring. He maintained that Kashmir had long suffered due to denial of major academic institutions and infrastructure.

Taking a direct swipe at the BJP, the JKPC president said attempts to shift the university reflected an effort to deprive Kashmir of an important centre of legal education. He asserted on the floor of the House that the university would be built in Kashmir and nowhere else.

The MLA said the issue went beyond party lines and concerned the future of students in the region. He urged the government to make its position clear and ensure that the university project is executed in Kashmir as originally envisaged.

The remarks led to sharp exchanges inside the House, adding to the charged atmosphere in the Assembly as debates continued on key policy and development matters. [KNT]
