KVK Bandipora harvests first crop of Basmati Rice, SR4

ADC congratulated scientists for successful trial; urges farmers to adopt scientific methods in fields to improve production

 BANDIPORA, SEPTEMBER 26: Krishi Vigyaan Kendra (KVK) Bandipora Saturday harvested its first crop of Basmati rice (scented rice) and SR-4.

          A grand function was organized on the occasion that was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner Bandipora Zahoor Ahmad Mir, Chief Scientist KVK Bandipora Dr Peerzada Shafat Hussain Dewani, scientists Dr Tariq Sultan (agronomy), Dr Hilal Ahmad Malik (agriculture extension) , Dr Tahir Saleem (Vegetable Science), Dr Nazir Ahmad Mir (Animal Science), Dr MS Tramboo (Forestry), District Officers of allied departments besides farmers who had assembled there to see the field performance of the newly introduced crop in the district.

          Additional Deputy Commissioner Bandipora Zahoor Ahmad Mir on the occasion congratulated the scientists of KVK for successfully cultivating the new varieties of rice. The crop is spread over 200 Kanals of land in Patushai Bandipora

He said cultivation of these varieties will help in increasing the production and   subsequent income of the farmers of the district and applauded the efforts of KVK for utilizing the land in proper way. He urged the concerned to conduct intensive awareness programmes for farmers to apprise them about latest technology.

Mir said the KVK is always trying to help the farmers in terms of enhancement of their production and productivity besides guiding them to adopt such crops and commodities as would enhance their source of livelihood. He assured every possible support to the institution in their research works.   

ADC Bandipora while describing the farmers as the real entrepreneurs who work hard to ensure food security, advised them to raise crops and commodities that are most rewarding and adopt the latest varieties and hybrids of field crops, fruits and of vegetables developed at the University for ensuring better returns and exhorted upon them to adopt the scientific methods in their fields for high economic returns.

 He also advised the youths of the district to take advantage of the KVK in terms of acquiring the scientific knowledge through the experts of various disciplines as one of the mandate of the KVK is to impart the trainings of different vocations and assured that University would always help them in developing human resource and in formulating self employment projects so that the youth becomes entrepreneurs.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Scientist Peerzada Shafat Hussain Dewani said the Basmati Rice yields three quintals per Kanal while the Shalimar Rice-4 (SR4) yields four quintals per Kanal.

He said the Basmati rice produce at KVK Bandipora is at par with other Basmati varieties. Dewani said KVK has produced 133 quintals of paddy seeds last year and this year they have planted SR4 on 9 Hectares of land and Basmati-494 on one Hectare.  He said the varsity lays massive front line demonstrations programme to popularize the cultivation of Basmati rice under local conditions and said the Basmati rice variety would be multiplied at a large scale for adoption.

He further stated that the centre has generated 1200 man days involving local populace for cultivation of paddy thereby not only providing employment to the local populace but also giving them hand on training to the farmers in using new scientific techniques for farming besides providing skill training of 6 months to local girls in order to train them in different job oriented skills. He said KVK mulls to provide vermi-compost to farmers at subsidized rates
