KU observes International Day of Older Persons

SRINAGAR, October 1: The University of Kashmir on Wednesday observed the International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) 2026 at its main campus, with speakers stressing the need to recognise the experience, knowledge and contributions of senior citizens.

The programme was organised by the Directorate of Lifelong Learning and Skill Development (DLLSD), KU, in collaboration with the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies on Ageing, Moul Mouj Foundation (MMF) and Geriatric Orthopedic Society of India (GOSI), Bengaluru.

Held under the theme “Wisdom Beyond Retirement”, the event focused on healthy and meaningful ageing and the need for continued social engagement of older persons.

Vice-Chancellor KU, Prof Nilofer Khan, said older persons remain an important part of society and their experience and wisdom should continue to be valued.

“Retirement should not mean withdrawal from society; experience and wisdom continue to have value,” she said.

Prof Khan also highlighted the role of educational institutions in creating greater awareness about ageing and encouraging communities to remain responsive to the needs and contributions of senior citizens.

Dean, School of Open Learning, KU, Prof Mushtaq Ahmad, said universities have an important role in creating opportunities for lifelong learning and meaningful engagement for older persons.

Founder and Chairman of MMF, Dr Zubair Saleem, said retirement should be viewed as the beginning of a new phase of life rather than its end. He stressed the importance of social engagement, dignity and opportunities for older persons to remain active and connected with society.

Earlier, Director DLLSD, KU, Prof Bashir Joo, in his welcome address, said the programme aimed to recognise the contributions of older persons and create awareness about their needs, rights and wellbeing.

Representatives of civil society, volunteers from MMF and GOSI, faculty members and students attended the programme.
