Bandipora, Sept 22: The Kashmir Environmental and Social Organization (KESO), Bandipora, organised a series of activities along the banks of Madhumati Nallah at Sunerwani as part of the Swachh Sagar Surakshit Sagar (SSSS) 5.0 campaign.
The campaign, a programme of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, in collaboration with the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), saw participation from students, volunteers, NGOs and community members.
The programme began with a cleanliness drive during which volunteers collected several kilograms of plastic waste from the banks of the water body. Dustbins were provided by the organisation for the collection of the waste.
The cleanliness drive was followed by a pledge in which volunteers committed themselves to protecting rivers and other water bodies from pollution.
Students and volunteers also interacted with local residents and raised awareness about the importance of keeping water bodies free from plastic and other waste.
Speaking during the programme, KESO General Secretary Mudasir Ahmad Mir briefed students and local residents about the importance of maintaining cleanliness around water bodies.
He said keeping one’s surroundings clean was an important step towards a cleaner and greener environment and noted that water bodies such as the Madhumati Nallah were important to local communities.
Mir urged students to extend the message of cleanliness to their families and communities and said such efforts should continue beyond a single campaign or designated day.
He also called upon students to encourage their parents and others in their neighbourhoods to avoid dumping plastic and other waste near water bodies..
