Kashmir Fully Stocked for Winter: Director FCSCA

Srinagar, Dec 15: The Director of Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Kashmir, Dr. Owais Ahmed on Monday provided comprehensive assurances regarding winter preparedness and the availability of essential commodities in the Kashmir valley.
Addressing concerns ahead of the harsh winter months, Dr. Owais speaking with Kashmir Convener stated that the department’s annual ‘winter dumping’ or ‘snow dumping’ procedure—the pre-positioning of supplies in vulnerable areas—is fully complete. “The distribution for December is entirely finished, particularly for areas that face cut-off during severe weather,” he said.
He emphasized the sufficiency of key supplies, stating, “Our stocks of petroleum products—LPG, diesel, and petrol—are adequate, and we are continuously monitoring the situation. We have also enhanced our storage capacity.” Regarding food grains, the Director confirmed robust reserves, stating, “We maintain a four-month buffer stock through the Food Corporation of India (FCI), in addition to one month’s supply at our own end. Effectively, we have provisions for five to six months, so there is no issue on that front.”
Dr. Owais highlighted ongoing market surveillance. “Regular market checks are being conducted. We are monitoring all aspects, and the situation is under control,” he affirmed.
When questioned about recent public concerns, including alleged rumors regarding egg concerns and past instances of substandard meat, the Director clarified the jurisdictional remit while assuring proactive measures. “Our duty pertains to essential commodities. For food safety standards, the concerned Food Safety Department is actively engaged. However, our joint inspection teams also conduct regular raids. They keep on checking, and everything is under control. Whenever any violation comes to our notice, appropriate action is taken,” he said.
On the matter of commodity pricing, Dr. Ahmed reiterated the department’s vigilance. “We continuously monitor the prescribed rates. Anywhere anything is found contravening government norms, we take strict and immediate action accordingly,” he asserted.
