Kashmir Convener, KESO organises online debate on World Environment Day; Results announced

Bandipora, June 12: With an aim to sensitize the people about the importance of preserving ecosystem, bio-diversity and the environment and to involve the students in productive activities amid lockdown, Kashmir Convener and Kashmir Environmental and Social Organization (KESO) Bandipora-a Non-Governmental Organisation ( NGO) organized an on-line Debate Competition on the theme “Restore Ecosystem.

Students from different Schools of the valley in different age groups participated in the online debate competition. Dr Ashiq Hussain- Assistant Professor Degree College Chattroo (Jammu)-an environmentalist presided over the online debate while Iftikhar Rashid- Lecturer Environmental Science and Sheikh Saleem-editor Kashmir Convener also assisted the Chief Guest in assessment of  all the participants.

The results of the debate competition were declared by Dr. Ashiq Hussain.

In Senior Category Muzamil Bashir from Higher Secondary School Mantrigam bagged the first position while Sajad Ahmad from HSS Bandipora got Second Position while Ulfat bagged the third position.

In Junior Category, Irtiqa Hamza-LKG student from Dooru Anantanag got first position while Anam Imtiyaz and Dua Bareen from NRP School Nadihal got 2nd and third position respectively.  

In Middle category Kaina Bhat of NRP School Nadihal Bandipora got first position while Sadat Muqararm from Iqbal Memorial Institute Bemina Srinagar got second and Mohammad Umair  and Ummi Hanni of NRP School Nadihal Bandipora got third position.

In his inaugural address, Dr Ashiq stressed on the need to restore different ecosystems to their originality and said otherwise time will come when there will be frequent competition, conflict among the different zones of the ecosystem.

While stressing on the need to change the attitude towards the environment and environment-related issues, he said, we need to develop the positive attitude among the people towards their ecology and environment and for that we must change our approach towards different ecosystems.

Appreciating the organizers for recent concluding programs like “Cleanliness drive” at Zainalank Wullar Lake, Online Painting Competition on International Biological diversity Day and the online debates, he hoped that the organisers will continue such programmes in near future.

Earlier welcoming the participants   Imtiyaz Rashid  General Secretary of Organization said World Environment Day (WED) is an annual event which is widely celebrated on June 5. He informed them the organisation is continuously trying its role in safe guard the environment by organising such awareness programmes.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Iftikhar Rashid Lecturer Environmental Science briefed the participants about the various environmental issues facing the world.

Sheikh Saleem, Editor Kashmir Convener while speaking on the occasion, said that turning to nature-based solutions and a nature-positive economy is the future. This can be done when there is a balance in the ecosystem and this can be done in many ways by planting trees and cleaning rivers and lakes. “World Environment Day is a reminder for us to pause and reflect on our actions and their subsequent consequences on the planet. We are living in a world where averting our eyes from the climate crisis is not an option,” he said.
