JKSA thanks EAM, LG for repatriating MBBS student’s body from Iran

Srinagar, Jan 20: The J&K Student Association on Saturday expressed gratitude to Union External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar and Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha for facilitating the return of the body of Kashmiri MBBS student Mohammad Arsalan Kanjawal from Iran. 

Arsalan, a fourth-year medical student at the (University of Medical Sciences) in Iran, passed away due to a suspected cardiac arrest

National Convenor Nasir Khuehami thanked Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha for intervening and coordinating with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Tehran to repatriate Arsalan's body to his family in Sopore Baramulla for the last rites. The association had promptly brought the matter to the attention of Union External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar's office and Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor from the beginning, providing details of the deceased student.

"We had demanded authorities to facilitate the return of the deceased's body to his ancestral village, and it was made possible. The family requested our assistance with the JK LG and MEA to bring the body home from Iran," added Khuehami. The LG Office coordinated also with the External Affairs Ministry for earliest reparation of mortal remains and to help bring the body of the deceased back home from Iran for the last rites. The J&K Govt immediately intervened in it and resolved the matter, Khuehami added.

Upon taking up the matter, the association received communication from Secretary Consular Of Indian Embassy in Tehran Harendra Singh, stating that steps were being taken to expedite the repatriation, with local procedures in progress. 

On Friday Evening Under Secretary Arun Kumar from Dr S. Jaishankar's office informed us that the body would be flown back to India via Mahan Air Flight No. W5 071 on January 19, 2024. The repatriation is facilitated by Mahan Air Flight No. W5 071, scheduled for 19th January 2024, at the expense of the GoI, Khuehami said while Quoting Arun Kumar.

After post-mortem and fulfilment of other formalities, the body was airlifted from Tehran at 6:10 pm on 19-01-2024 and arrived in New Delhi at 1:15 am today," Khuehami stated. The body was then transported to Srinagar and reached Srinagar Airport at 1:45 pm, with an ambulance ready to further shift the body to the native village in Sopore.
