Kokernag, Sonamarg emerge as hotspots

JAMMU, Feb 20: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Friday informed the Legislative Assembly that over 1.62 crore tourists have visited the Union Territory in 2025.

Replying to a question by MLA Javid Hassan Baig, the Tourism Department placed destination-wise data before the House, comparing footfall over the last three years.

According to the figures, the Jammu division has recorded 1,62,35,036 visitors in 2025 till date, while the Kashmir division has received 4,77,882 tourists. The combined footfall stands at over 1.67 crore.

The data further revealed that in 2024, Jammu division saw 2,00,91,379 tourists and Kashmir 98,19,841. In 2023, Jammu recorded 1,80,24,166 visitors and Kashmir 96,33,972.

Among major destinations in Kashmir this year, officials said Sonamarg logged 4,87,638 visitors, Kokernag 6,12,235, Doodhpathri 1,27,919, Gulmarg 1,10,728, and Pahalgam 1,00,236.

In the Jammu division, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra attracted over 69.32 lakh pilgrims in 2025, while Shiv Khori saw more than 10.56 lakh devotees. Other destinations including Patnitop, Mansar, Bhaderwah, Sanasar and Surinsar also registered steady footfall.

Describing tourism as a key pillar of the UT’s economy, the government said the sector provides direct and indirect employment to hoteliers, transporters, tour guides, artisans and small traders.

Officials informed the House that to restore confidence among tourists, the administration has strengthened security at tourist locations, improved road connectivity and civic amenities, and intensified promotional campaigns. Familiarisation tours for travel operators, influencers and media are also being organised, they added.

The government further outlined a phased roadmap focusing on infrastructure upgradation, better connectivity, expansion of accommodation facilities including homestays, and skill development for local youth.

Special emphasis is being laid on diversification through pilgrimage, adventure, eco, rural and winter tourism to generate employment and ensure inclusive economic growth across the Union Territory, the government said.
