JK Students Association Slams AMU for Targeting Kashmiri Scholar
Srinagar, April 17: The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) has strongly condemned the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) administration for issuing a show cause notice to Zubair Altaf Reshi, a Kashmiri PhD scholar from the Department of Botany and National Spokesperson of the Association.
Terming the move as a direct attack on academic freedom and student rights, the Association has accused the university authorities of suppressing dissent and intimidating students.
In a strongly worded statement, JKSA National Convenor Nasir Khuehami called the notice “a brazen attempt to silence a student for exercising his constitutionally guaranteed freedom of expression,” adding that such actions were reflective of “administrative tyranny” within the institution.
According to the Association, the Provost of Mohammad Habib Hall, Dr. Zubair Shahdab, not only issued the notice but also allegedly threatened Reshi with dire academic consequences, including disengagement from his PhD programme and debarment from the university.
The alleged intimidation followed Reshi’s raising of concerns over issues such as financial irregularities, deteriorating infrastructure, and violations of democratic norms in the hostel administration.
“Instead of addressing the genuine issues flagged by the student, the university has resorted to using its authority to harass and silence him,” Khuehami said, condemning the administration’s handling of the matter.
The Association expressed concern over what it termed a growing pattern of repression against student voices at AMU, particularly those advocating democratic values and progressive reforms.
