Srinagar, June 13: Amid intensifying hostilities between Iran and Israel, the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association has urged Union External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar to take immediate steps to ensure the safety and evacuation of hundreds of Kashmiri students currently stranded in Iran.
In a letter addressed to the Ministry of External Affairs, the Association raised serious concerns over the deteriorating security situation following Israeli airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear sites and subsequent retaliatory missile and drone attacks by Tehran. The Association warned that the region is teetering on the edge of a full-blown war, placing the lives of Indian students—particularly those from the Kashmir Valley—at grave risk.
“These students, most of whom had gone to Iran to pursue MBBS and other professional degrees due to affordable academic opportunities, are now caught in a potential conflict zone,” said Nasir Khuehami, National Convenor of the Students Association.
He said many students are enrolled in universities located near military sites and critical infrastructure, which heightens their vulnerability. “Students have reported hearing air raid sirens, experiencing tremors, and seeing increased military activity near their hostels. Some are in cities already targeted by airstrikes,” Khuehami said.
Despite multiple attempts by students to contact the Indian Embassy in Tehran, there has reportedly been little clarity or coordinated response so far. Families in Jammu and Kashmir are said to be extremely anxious, with some making frantic appeals for help.
“Students are terrified. Their parents back home are in distress. Every minute without information feels like an eternity to them,” Khuehami added, urging the government to respond with urgency.
The Association has called for the immediate creation of a direct communication channel between the Indian mission in Iran and the stranded students. It also appealed for timely advisories, emergency protocols, and a contingency evacuation plan in case the situation worsens.
Calling it a humanitarian emergency, the Association emphasized that delays in response could endanger lives and deepen the anxiety of affected families. “The safety and return of Indian students—especially those from Jammu and Kashmir—must be treated as a national priority,” the Association said.
They further requested the Ministry of External Affairs to coordinate with Iranian authorities and international agencies to ensure the protection and, if required, safe evacuation of Indian nationals.
