Int’l Women’s Day : GDC Sumbal Discuss Challenges, Achievements of Women

Bandipora March 08: Women’s Development cell in collaboration with the National Social Service, Government Degree College Sumbal on Saturday organised an inspiring and insightful programme to mark the celebration of international women’s Day.

The programme presided over by Deputy commissioner Bandipora Manzoor Ahmad Qadri provided a platform to discuss women’s contributions, challenges, and the path forward towards a more inclusive society.

The programme commenced with Tilawat and Naat, followed by the traditional Kashmiri Izbund Ceremony, a cultural practice symbolizing prosperity and well-being.

In her inaugural address Principal, Prof. (Dr.) Shabeena Iqbal Shawl, emphasized the significance of women’s empowerment and the crucial role of education in achieving gender equality. She eloquently traced the history of International Women’s Day and its relevance in today’s world, where women continue to fight for equal rights and opportunities.

Highlighting the need to challenge gender biases, she called for collective efforts to elevate the dignity of women and ensure their active participation in shaping future of society.

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner M.A.Qadri emphasized the need to bridge gender disparities and empower women beyond domestic spaces.

M.A.Qadri highlighted Government initiatives which play a crucial role in advancing gender equality.

He highlighted Government initiatives in STEM fields designed to empower women, promote education and innovation and bridge the gap in these critical sectors.

He emphasized continued support to initiatives that empower women, provide equal opportunities, and eliminate the barriers that hinder their progress.

Addressing the participants, Nighat Aman, SSP, JK Police, spoke about the importance of self-realization among women, pointing out that gender inequality is deeply rooted within family structures and must be addressed from the grassroots level.

The programme featured insightful discussions from various speakers who shed light on the challenges women face daily, including the dowry system, gender-based violence, and cyber exploitation.

They also elaborated on strategies, legislative measures, and policies aimed at amplifying women’s voices and overcoming these challenges.

On the occasion a felicitation ceremony was held to honour guests, dignitaries, and outstanding female students excelling in sports, cultural activities, and academics.

Dr. Shafia, a faculty member, was recognized for her significant contributions to the college’s development.

Additionally, female local fund workers were appreciated for their unwavering commitment.

The celebrations were further enriched by cultural performances from Govt. Girls Higher Secondary School students, featuring traditional dance and music, which added vibrancy to the event while showcasing Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage.

The program concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. Shumaila Nazir, who expressed gratitude to guests, faculty members, students, and participants from various departments.

Among others the programme was attended by SDM Sumbal, Murtaza Ahmad Sheikh, Prosecuting Officer Ganderbal Dr. Tabassum Ara, Women entrepreneurs, Women Social Workers and large gathering of female students.
